Description

Newspaper column "NEWS HITS" in the Metro Times summarizes two First Amendment cases in the metro-Detroit area. There is a picture in the upper-right corner of a man named John Bennett, wearing a black jacket and black beanie. He is standing in front of a large statue of fist (the Monument to Joe Louis in Detroit). Bennett is making a similar fist gesture towards the camera.

Detroit Police Officer John Bennett was suspended without pay because he wrote criticisms of the police chief and Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick; he took his case to the Michigan Employee Relations Commission and won. In Ferndale, protestors Nancy (McGuire) Goedert and Victor Kittila were ticketed during a protest for holding signs that encouraged motorists to honk their horns in order to show opposition. The ACLU took their case to court and U.S. Judge Denise Page Hood sided with the protestors.
