Description
"SOMOS" in large block letters, with "Southwest Detroit" in the lower right, with key features of the neighborhood. Two men engaged in manual labor are the focal point, in addition to a vendor with "CRUSH ICE" message on his bike.
Artist statement: “SOMOS (“We Are”) is a call to unify through a collective community identity in Southwest Detroit via an array of imagery that reminds us of this place we call home. The focal piece was inspired by frescoes painted at the Detroit Institute of Art in 1933 by Mexican Marxist artist Diego Rivera as a tribute to the manufacturing base and labor force of the city. Rivera believed the social commentaries imbedded in art belonged on public spaces rather than in private galleries. This mural reflects that sentiment, urging us to respect each other’s contributions to this place and to continue working together to create a strong diverse and united community.“ These murals are created through a process of engagement with residents in the community in order to uplift and honor their cultural identity.
