Description

This mosaic is created out of a grid of 72 separate squares (8 tiles across by 9 tiles high). The second and third rows from the top include the name of the institution (one letter per square), and its logo (M superimposed with an anchor). The letters were created in white ceramic tile fragments and the letters are surrounded by deep blue small square tesserae. The logo was created using the same white ceramic tile fragments, however other squares of the mosaic are all unique and appear to have been created by different individuals. Many of the squares contain a single or two hands. The squares' artistic designs and the materials used to create them vary. Light grey cement was used in the assembly of each square and for the entire mosaic. The mosaic is affixed directly to the brick facade of the building.

Abstract

This mosaic is on the wall of Mariner's Inn, a treatment center and shelter for the homeless in Detroit, Michigan. There is no online documentation that describes who made the mosaic and whether it was a collaborative effort. It has several cement tiles with colorful mosaic designs and lettered tiles in the center. It appears that each cement tile was made by a different person. The logo of the shelter is also present in the artwork.
