Description
This mural is painted on the side of a comic book store called Vault of Midnight in Detroit, in celebration of opening a new location. It is an homage to Detroit, depicting Detroit-based creator Dwayne McDuffie surrounded by comic book characters created by himself and others. It notably highlights Black and Brown characters, such as Vixen, Kamala Khan, Icon, and Elena Abbott. It is painted in the style of comic book panels, with vivid colors and several text boxes that read "In the city of Detroit ... there was a symbol of hope for those who would rise up to defeat evil." It also contains a text box next to McDuffie's portrait that contains a short biography: "Dwayne McDuffie was an American comic book writer, producer and editor. Born in Detroit, MI, February 20, 1962. McDuffie graduated from the University of Michigan in 1983 and later co-founded the pioneering comic-book company MILESTONE comics. Milestone addressed the underrepresentation of Blacks and minorities in American comics. McDuffie received multiple Eisner Award nominations for his work on the ICON comic book series, as well as an Emmy Award nomination for his animated series STATIC SHOCK. (February 20, 1962 - February 21, 2011)".
