Description

Mural painting depicting African American performers and/or musicians, and building with sign that reads "606 Horse Shoe Cocktail Lounge".

“Tribute to Paradise Valley” depicts African American musicians and entertainers and the 606 Horse Shoe Lounge, the last remaining nightclub from Detroit’s legendary Paradise Valley, which was the center of Detroit’s African American Community during the 1930s and 1940s (The Henry Ford, n.d.). Identifiable entertainers include singer jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald (with microphone), blues singer Alberta Hunter, blues singer-guitarist John Lee Hooker (with guitar), and jazz harpist, singer, and composer Dorothy Ashby (with harp). The mural also features a trumpet player, a pianist’s hands playing a piano keyboard, and other figures, in a vibrant collage style. Painted mural on the eastern wall of one-story brick building, estimated at 2700 square feet.
