This collectible plate was commissioned by Detroit's J.L. Hudson department store in the mid-20th century as a promotional giveaway. It is glazed and the plate image results from a transferware process in a monochromatic shade of brown.

The reverse bears the mark of its creator, Vernon Kilns USA.

The obverse shows a mid-20th century view of Detroit's downtown skyline, surrounded by scenes, beginning clockwise at the top, of: the Ford Rotunda building, the University of Detroit campus, the Fisher Building, the Detroit Art Museum, the Masonic Temple, and the Ambassador Bridge.
