Winter in art.
An oval-shaped wood tray painted with acrylic. The edge of the tray is curved up and down, creating a wavy effect. The entire tray is painted red. About two inches from the edge of the tray, there is an oval-shaped ridge. Within this oval-shaped ridge is the main painting. Within the oval-shaped ridge, there is a painted white oval surrounded by an orange curved border. Black leaves and yellow dots surround the orange curved border. In the white oval, a man and woman are pictured ice skating. The man is on the right side of the white oval looking to his left at the woman. The woman is to the left of the man and looking straight ahead. The woman is grasping the man's hands with both of her hands. She is leaning slightly toward the man on the right side. The man is leaning slightly to the left toward the woman. The man has peach-toned skin and chin-length straight brown hair. He wears a light blue fedora-type hat wrapped with a ribbon. The ribbon on the hat is white with a red grid pattern. A pinecone with leaves is placed on the ribbon of the hat. The man wears a long dark red trench coat with a long collar and two yellow buttons. He has a red scarf on that nearly reaches the end of the coat. Only one of his legs is visible. On the visible leg, he wears grey pants. The man has a black ice skate on. The woman has peach-toned skin and red lips. Her hair is orange. Her hair reaches her back and is blowing slightly toward the left side. She wears a teal trench coat with white fur surrounding the hood, wrists, neck, and chest area. The coat is opened slightly, so the fur stretches down the left and right side of the coat. Under the coat, the woman appears to wear a red dress with four pink buttons and a hanging pink ribbon with two black tassels. The bottom of the dress has two layers. The top layer is white with thin black horizontal stripes. The bottom layer of the dress is solid black. The woman wears red tights and black ice skates. Three small dark red vines with red berries surround the bottom of the white oval under the man and woman. Above the man and woman, a dark red vine stretches down toward the woman's face. A pink rose blooms on the left of the vine, while red berries are scattered on the right part of the vine. Along the outer edge of the tray are six groups of flowers. The center of each group of flowers is a light pink rose, with the exception of the top and bottom groups. The light pink rose is surrounded by four or five light orange rose buds and green leaves. The top and bottom groups of flowers are two light pink roses with a white rose in the center of them. Each group of flower is surrounded by a random variety of light blue and red flower buds as well as dark green leaves. Between each group of flowers stemming from the left and right sides of each flower group is an orange wavy line, creating a border along the edge of the tray.

Below it near the bottom left of the tree, a gnome is seen wearing a blue and black striped hat with a red tassel at the end and white dots within the black stripes. Its hands are small pink dots which grip the hat of a third gnome sitting next to it near the bottom of the tree. The third gnome sitting near the bottom of the tree wears a red and black striped hat with a blue tassel at the end and white dots within the black stripes. This gnome's feet are visible; it wears black boots with red hearts on the soles. Its arms are white with red stripes and its hands are pink, resting on the ground. It wears black boots on its feet. None of the gnomes have visible facial features aside from their large circular noses, which are all a light tan color. A red horizontal stripe is painted about two inches from the bottom of the rectangular portion of the sign. Under the red stripe is the word "Believe," stenciled on with blue acrylic paint. Three wooden yellow stars have been applied to the front of the sign with craft glue. One yellow star is applied near the top left, one near the middle, and one near the top right of the front of the sign. The stars have glitter on them. The back of the rectangular portion of the sign is also painted with white snowflakes, scattered randomly throughout the background. Flowers in art.
Acrylic painting--Technique.
A heart-shaped wooden jewelry box that opens from the bottom point of the heart shape in an upward motion. Acrylic paint has been applied to the jewelry box. The box has two visible dark gold hinges about one inch from the top of the box, separated about five inches apart from each other. The paint is matte and lies flat. The base color is a neutral light tan. Specks of purple are scattered atop the light tan color in various sized dots. Along the sides of the box, purple paint is splattered in uneven patterns, creating a blurred effect. The bottom of the box is flat and has specks of purple scattered in various sized dots. [Acrylic portrait of melancholic woman]
Portrait painting--United States--20th century. [LCSH]
Women in art [LCSH]
Surrealism [LCSH]
Portrait of a melancholic woman, from the neck up, in acrylic on paper, mounted on thick, textured, camel-colored card stock (not pictured). This painting is done in the style of Expressionism, using unrealistic colors; the woman's skin is painted in shades of pinks and purples, for instance. She is facing slightly away from the viewer, left at a 3/4 angle. The figure has a thin, angular, waif-like face, and pointed chin, with a long, thin nose and a pointed chin and full lips. Her irises and pupils are a stark, solid, extremely deep blue color, very nearly black, and the outline of her eyes is suggested in a slightly lighter blue. She is resting her right hand against her right cheek, palm out, and fingers slightly curled. The thumb appears to run underneath her chin, her little finger resting just beneath her eye, the tip of her ring finger just below and to the right of her nose, and her middle and index fingers resting near the right side of her mouth. The woman's hair is full, long, straight, and straw-colored, with some yellow highlights near the crown of the head. There's a bright yellow area on the top of the woman's right shoulder. There is no evidence of clothing, though, and it's unclear what the yellow area is meant to represent. There are some green tones on the woman's neck, perhaps representing shadow, but her underlying skin color is still purple. The paint is applied thickly in this painting, particularly in the woman's hair. Different shades of pink and purple are used to create the contours of the face and imply shadows. The painting was done on paper taken from a pad, and there are both tabs along the top, near the crown of the head, and hole punches along the left side, three of which are visible. The bottom three centimeters of the paper was folded under along the bottom edge of the paper to make the working area smaller. The paper is torn inward at the middle hole punch and there are three creases running left to right across the paper in even increments where it must have been folded at one time. One crease runs across the woman's forehead, under her bangs. The second crease runs just under the bridge of the woman's nose and just below her eyes. The third crease runs through her wrist and just beneath her bottom lip, through the yellow paint on her right shoulder. Additionally, there's a section of paper missing from the top right of the painting, slightly impacting the depiction of the woman's hair.
