The Eyo [Adamu Orisha Play]
Mural painting and decoration, American--Michigan--Detroit--21st Century.
Eyo Festival.
Yoruba (African people)--Rites and ceremonies.
Four separate murals painted in panels on the side facade of building. Each panel contains a figure cloaked in white carrying a staff and wearing a solid colored hat. The white drape over the head and upper body is painted in warm cream tones, and is decorated with warp spaces created in the weaving process. The drape over the lower body is undecorated and painted in cool white tones. Each figure is surrounded by a thin triangle which has been painted in a sold color. The triangle cast a shadow on each figure. Each figure is painted on a solid black background.
Artist notes the figures are representative of costumed dancers from the Eyo festival part of West African and Afro-Caribbean tradition. In Lagos, Nigeria, where the ceremony began, the masqueraded figures are meant to escort the departed soul of the leader and welcome the new leader.
